Get answers to common questions about our programs and approach.
Do I need any previous Japanese knowledge to start?
Nope. Our beginner modules start from absolute zero. We teach hiragana and katakana from scratch, and you don’t need to know anything before you begin. Most people start with zero experience, and that’s completely fine.
How is this different from regular language classes?
We don’t just drill vocabulary and grammar rules. Every lesson connects to Japanese culture — history, customs, traditions, food, and social values. When you understand why the language works a certain way, it sticks with you way better than memorizing lists.
What’s the time commitment like?
It depends on the program you choose. Some modules are self-paced online content you can fit around your schedule. Others have structured sessions. Most learners spend 3-5 hours per week and see solid progress within a few months.
Are your instructors native speakers?
Yes. All our instructors are native Japanese speakers who’ve trained in teaching Japanese as a second language. They understand both the language and the culture deeply, plus they know what’s hard for English speakers learning Japanese.
Can I actually use this to have real conversations?
That’s the whole point. We focus on practical communication skills you’ll actually use — ordering food, introducing yourself, asking for directions, talking about interests. You won’t just know grammar; you’ll know how to actually talk to Japanese people.
Do you offer programs in different Canadian cities?
Yes. We’ve got in-person and online options across Canada. Whether you’re in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary, or anywhere else, you can access our programs. Check with us about what’s available in your area.
What Learners Say
People from across Canada share their experience learning Japanese through cultural immersion.
“I was skeptical about the cultural approach at first, but it actually made everything click. Understanding why Japanese has different politeness levels completely changed how I think about the language. Now I’m having real conversations with Japanese friends, and I can actually understand context — not just words.”
“My daughter wasn’t interested in typical language lessons. But when we started with the cultural stuff — food words, traditions, history — she got genuinely excited. She’s been studying for eight months now and her pronunciation is way better than I expected. She even watches anime without subtitles sometimes.”
“The three writing systems seemed impossible until they explained the history. Once I understood that kanji came from Chinese and hiragana developed as a phonetic system, it wasn’t just random symbols anymore. It took patience but now I’m reading simple texts. The instructors really know their stuff and they’re patient with questions.”
